Study Program Materials Science

Our department is strongly involved in the education of under-
graduates at the University of Stuttgart. Prof. E. Arzt jointly chairs both the Max Planck department and the Institute of Physical Metallurgy at the University, where he holds the professorship for metals physics.

Undergraduates in the study program "Werkstoffwissenschaft" (Materials Science) receive a high-level interdisciplinary training leading to a diploma degree in engineering (Dipl.-Ing.). The program is housed in the faculty of chemistry. It is rooted in the natural sciences and is linked to applied sciences and engineering contents. Collaborations with the strong industrial environment in the Stuttgart area offer the students a well-developed balance between fundamentals and applications.

Student applications are invited from all over the world.

Courses offered by the department (in German)

  • Introduction to materials physics
  • Solid mechanics
  • Mechanical properties of materials
  • Electronic properties of materials
  • Metallic materials I, II
  • Analytical methods I, II
