The principle steps of an oxidation reaction: Dissociative oxygen adsorption, metal and oxygen ion diffusion through the growing oxide layer |
|
The oxidation behavior of pure metal and alloy surfaces is of great technological importance for a variety of different fields such as heterogeneous catalysis, high temperature resistant materials, micro-electronics, magneto-electric tunnel junctions and gas sensors.
The aim of this project is to study the oxidation behavior of metal alloys and the properties of thin oxide layers as a function of temperature and oxygen pressure using surface sensitive x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and ion beam probes.
Main aspects are:
- oxide thickness, metal /oxide interfacial morphology as a function of time and temperature
- oxide structure, defects, orientational relationship to the substrate
- transport processes, preferential oxidation (alloy)
- oxidation kinetics
- oxidation induced segregation
- magnetic properties
