Service Group Sample Preparation
|
|
For the scientific investigations in our institute, different samples are needed. Usually, these samples can be purchased from special companies, however, often occurs that the samples should be made, modified, or characterised in the institute. The sample preparation service facility takes over these tasks.

Typical and usually very complicated tasks are the production and characterisation of single crystals. For these activities, a set of ovens and crystal-growing furnaces, for the orientation and characterising of the samples a Laue X-ray equipment and a so-called gamma-diffractometer is available.
Frequently, crucible-free methods can be used. In this case, as compared with the traditional crucible methods, much higher purity can be achieved.
The gamma-diffractometer makes use of the strong penetrability of the high energy gamma rays of a radioactive isotope and by this instrument the bulk properties can be obtained even for large crystals.

For shaping the samples in the geometrical, chemical, and physical state as required by the research group, further equipments are available like cutting and polishing machines, furnaces, mills or forges.
The experiences of the coworkers in this service facility lie in particular in the field of refractory metals and alloys. The production, characterisation, and processing of samples of other materials are however also possible.
