Diploma or Master Thesis

The department of Biosystems and New Materials (Prof. Spatz) has job offers for Diploma or Master Thesis:

“Bionic Micro-Generator/Bio-Generator”

Background of this project is the development of a bionic power supply, consisting of rows of synthetic micro- or nanoelectrodes in combination with a robust and self-regenerating eukaryotic cell culture system. This setup allows the production of electrical energy using the electrochemical resting potential of cells and can therefore be used as a biological energy source for operating various devices. These include for example heart and brain pacemakers and hearing aids, which - in case of body implants - are continuously charged by the nutrients present in the surrounding tissue.
The aim of the diploma or master thesis is the development and optimization of bio-compatible nano-electrode interfaces and their implementation in standard eukaryotic cell culture systems.
Ziel der Diplom- oder Masterarbeit ist die Entwicklung und Optimierung von bio-kompatiblen Nano-Elektrodenoberflächen, sowie deren Implementierung in standardisierte eukaryontische Zellkultursysteme.

Figure 1 Because of the combination of cell biology, electrophysiology, electrochemistry, electro-physics, micro-and nanotechnology as well as material science the project requires a highly interdisciplinary work in various fields of science. The candidate (m/f) should have studied physics or biology and have strong interest in interdisciplinary topics and innovative experimental approaches.

Applicants please send an email with a CV and a brief letter explaining your interest in this thesis to: linkPfeil Dr. Amin Rustom
