The scientific objectives of the department concentrate on the search for novel materials with defined microstructures and outstanding properties. For this purpose, fundamental studies of the thermodynamics of relevant materials systems and of the mechanisms underlying suitable production processes are undertaken along with detailed characterisation of microstructure and properties.
