The Institute puts special emphasis on translating its fundamental research into technological applications. This is reflected by the large number of projects with industrial partners as well as a special collaborative initiative with the Robert Bosch GmbH.

This Innovation Initiative is meant to be a long-term program to actively promote the development of new materials and the optimization of their functions for future technologies through joint research projects. Starting in 2006, regular informal meetings and a bi-annual workshop have been held to evaluate and discuss current results. The latest workshop took place at the Robert Bosch GmbH on November 21, 2008.

The major collaborations with industrial partners are:
• BASF Micro-Nanostructuring (Dept. Spatz)
• Boston Scientific Corp. Coating of stent surfaces (Dept. Spatz)
• Clariant Self-cleaning surfaces (Dept. Spatz)
• Corning Inc. Serum-free cell cultures (Dept. Spatz)
• Honda Motor Europe Nitriding of iron-based alloys (Dept. Mittemeijer)
• Robert Bosch GmbH Origin of whisker formation (Dept. Mittemeijer)
Whisker formation on Sn layer (Dept. Mittemeijer)
Nanosized thin sintered Ag layers (Dept. Mittemeijer)
• Qiagen Nano-Biotechnology (Dept. Spatz)
• Zeiss AG Optical hybrid systems (Dept. Spatz)

The employee turnover stipulated in the statutes maintains the creativity indispensable to conduct research at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research. Not only are former researchers employed by renowned research institutions or hold important university chairs but they are also to be found in important positions in industry.
